The same ingredient can be supplied in more than one physical form. A powder, oil dispersion or protected format may differ in handling, compatibility and processing behaviour, even when the active component is similar.

Begin with the finished product

Define whether the material will be used in a capsule, tablet, dry blend, beverage, gummy, softgel or topical system. The target dosage form narrows the practical choices and helps the supplier identify the information that matters most.

Consider the processing environment

Temperature, oxygen, light, water activity, pH and shear can affect sensitive materials. Ask about the proposed format, carrier system and recommended handling conditions, then confirm performance through your own formulation and stability work.

Compare on a consistent basis

When formats contain different carriers or active concentrations, compare them on the same calculation basis. Include the active level, serving target, process loss assumptions and the amount of total material added to the formula.

Request the documents that match the format

Specifications and technical information should identify the physical form and any relevant carrier. Availability of supporting documents and samples varies, so these requirements should be included in the initial sourcing brief.
